first of all i would like to thank you, you have spent so much of your time for customizing this personal starter kit , it looks great I tried to run your project, it is running perfectly fine, but i have some issue regarding database: 1) i want to see database tables , SPs etc but i don't know everytime i try to open the database in VS 2008 (in solution explorer) it gives me error message "The database version is not supported" , i am using Visual Studio 2008 professional version I even installed SQL Server 2005 for this and tried to attach personal.mdf database with it then it gives me error message saying " the database you're trying to open is 655 version, you can only open 611 or below) Then i installed SQL Server 2008 but in that it gives me version not supported, please guide me how i can open the database ? 2) On the homepage > in the photo section > The project is taking random pictures from the album but i would like to limit it with only 1 album of my choice so that this feature picks randow photos from that album only, please guide me how to go about it. 3) The pages like guestbook, contact me , or with any new registration notification messages etc goes to admin e-mail address right ? where i have to specify this admin e-mail address ? Is this the location where i have to specify e-mail address ? <mailSettings> <smtp from="youremail@yourdomain.net"> <network host="smtp.@yourdomail.com" userName="youremail@yourdomain.net" password="AdminPassword" /> </smtp> </mailSettings> and this is for new registration notification : <add key="AdminEmail" value="youremail@yourdomain.net"/> , is it correct? sorry for my long question i am new in asp.net technology, please guide me in a right direction i have also sent you a private message on asp.net, if possible please

Hi, thanks for all your wonderful work on this site. I notice your gallery has the same issue mine does. When lytebox is not enabled, and you select a picture to view in the details page, the correct picture does not always come up (just click on the first chihuahua in your dog album). It seems the detail page chooses the picture based on the "Page" querystring attribute and not the "PhotoID" querystring attribute, and this is so that the next and previous buttons work. Even though I changed the stored procedure, GetPhotos, to order by PhotoID asc instead of by caption, I don't understand why the gallery page (photos.aspx) isn't sorted by PhotoID-- this would help fix the issue of Details.aspx showing the correct photo with the correct page. I've only been messing around with the site for a day or so, do you have any insight on how to fix this?

fantastic site and everything working well except the images in the albums. I can create an album but dont seem to be able to upload any pictures to the album itself. <P> I tried uploading images to the upload folder which displays the images on the edit album screen - but when I click import selected or import all the screen takes a couple of secs and then refreshes - no images are uploaded. If I try and add an image manually I get the exact same outcome - no images. <P> I have read that you created an appsetting in the web.config for the album location and when I create a new album - ID 7 for example - there doesn't appear to be a folder 7 under the albums folder. <P> Any ideas??

Hey Jeremy, First of all great work on the starter kit, I've used it for my website (www.skilts.com). Question... if you try to access a page as a registered user that does not have access to that area, you receieve a nasty error instead of a 'access denied' or something similar. The exact error is "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" in login.aspx line 15. Could you please point me in the right direction in terms of wrapping something friendlier around this???? thanks!

I am working on a multi-language version of the PWS (in C#). The current version is English only, and is a mix of the original PWS, Your User Management and Blog systems (translated into C#), most of the Media Handling from Matt Gieselman (at one time available for download), and my own extensions (including a Guestbook section and some server controls). As I am working on the new version, I am keeping track of the changes made in some articles that I want to publish with the new version, and provide some code for downloading. As quit a bit of the code originated with you, I don't want to include that without your consent. (As I did not find any specific terms for doing so). Obviously, I will give you credit for your work, would you decide to allow me to include such code.

Hi Jeremy, Nice to see the new look and the long awaited 2.8 I'll be sure to tinker with that in the near future. I like the new look but I think I'm going to try and go for one with a larger width as my blogs get squashed and wrap which doesn't look to good when writing code. Actually, have you looked into a better control than freeTextBox that allows you to enter a code paragraph much like www.asp.net? But congratulations on all the hard work!

Hello Jeremy, I downloaded the Starter kit version 2.8. I want to know the username and password to login into the site as Admin and modify it. I have implemented version 2.7 of your code. Also can you please tell me where exactly i have to modify for the mail server to keep working(Currently it is not working - i modified the webconfig file - no success) on which pages i need to fix this? Do i need to include any further code for doing this? Regards

Hi Jeremy, ........................ Currently putting the finishing touches to your 2.8 version website for my web presence. I was going to wait but I managed to corrupt my own database on my previous version by attemptng to put some embed code from Youtube site into my blog as follows : ....................... ..............<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/tm6Qc5qK5yA"></param><param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/tm6Qc5qK5yA" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object> .................... This just seemed to corrupt my blog database so I thought I would upgrade (though I realise this might not sort the problem as it is standard comment box code). I didn't actually have a recent backup database of my site so my fault... I should know better....I thoughts on the above problem at all? I appreciate it may not be something that can be resolved though it might be worth mentioning in your blog if no resolution can be found immediately as it causes the home page to error. I didn't have the appropriate SQL Server 2005 tools to resolve my problem alas. Resorted to a March version of my site until I upload 2.8.... Other than that, your 2.8 version looks good so far though I have to put it online as yet which shouldn't take me too long... liked what you've done with it..................... Oh.. just one other thing.. I have a vague memory that there was a parameter which dictated how many blog posts were allowed on the home page for the centre column. I have either imagined this or just plain forgotten it... I have been through web.config and global.asax etc. but with no luck. Is there such a param?

Hi Jeremy, Thanks for approving my registration. I wanted to take a look at your code for the personal web site. Being new to .net I set up a site using the microsoft-supplied code for the personal web site and went through their "extending" tutorial. The content management isn't working and adding new users seems to crash the entire application. Right now I am not sure whether the issue lies with the code or the way I have my server set up. I thought that taking a look at your code might be a step in the right direction. All the best, Matt

Hi Jeremy! This enhanced starter kit is really amazing. You have probably houndreds of hours of hard work behind you. You are a good hearted guy sharing this with others :-) I'm pretty new to ASP.NET and found the original Starter Kit very useful in learning. Your Enhanced Kit will probably give me a really boost in the learning process. I had a lot of problems uploading my original Kit to my Host because they had some lousy sql server 2000 and a crappy controlpanel (and I'm a crappy programmer..). I have today ordered the advanced plan package at Webhost4life. I have registered at your site, but awaits you to activate the account so I can start downloading your enhanced kit. Just downloaded, looks great, will have to convert to MSQL2000 as this is what my host has. BTW for marcelvreuls - syntax errors are likely to arise if importing into SQL2000 or earlier - they don't have nvarchar(max). Jeremy, how do you moderate guest book?

I love the site...thanks alot. However, I noticed with the code download that you provide on your site the borders of the photos are not displayed correctly if you upload an portrait photo versus a landscaped photo. Am I doing something wrong or are you aware of this. If this is known do you have a work around for this. Thanks a ton! Sincerely, Jason H. Burr

Hi Jeremy I am currently on an asp.net course and one of the attendees pointed me to your starter kit. I will be hosting this on my own SQL server 2005, and have run the scripts to create the tables etc. However, I seem to be having trouble configuring the application to use the SQL server rather than the express edition. I have changed the web.config to the correct strings, although there seems to be an issue with app_data. Do you have any pointers for correcting this problem.

Harry, I'm not aware of my code being converted to C#. You could be the first if you went after it. There are portions of code in my site that I converted to VB.NET from C# using the following online converter. Hi Jeremy... I have just downloaded your VB Personal Starter Kit and I must say, it certainly is a major contribution to ASP.NET 2.0 learning (and then some). What better way to learn the technology than to play around with something that is actually very useful for Personal/Business use. This was the original intention of the first kit offered on the http://www.asp.net site and you have just extrapulated it off the edge of the graph with an offering that is quite humbling to an IT guy like me, your's is the benchmark. I will be printing and sifting through the code and looking at your approaches to learn more and hopefully (in the not too distant future) adding extra functionality. First things first, as a guy who has spent 16 years on Mainframes (HP NonStop formerly Tandem with COBOL85, TAL, SCOBOL, NonStop SQL etc.) I need to get up to speed by progressing my Static HTML/Javascript site ( http://www.mawhitfield.com/ and http://www.worsleypark.info/) to a more impressive ASP.NET site by using your offering as a guide and quickstart. Keep up the good work and look forward to calling by to your Website every know and then to see the latest additions and ventures. Regards NonStopMark. PS. Like what you did with the users Management... so many entries on the asp.net forum here...Implementing a Calendar ala the Starter Club Website would be a nice addition but hey, you've already contributed so much so that kinda sounds cheeky :-)

Hi Jeremy, I've been having a few problems with ASP.NET 2.0 and the profiles part of things and thought I'd run this question past you (love the blog by the way!) I have a custom property called "FullName". I have a form that allows logged in users to edit details about an item - how do I populate a dropdownlist with Profile.Fullname from every user? I've tried the following code, but I can't then seem to set the SelectedValue on the dropdownlist to equal the current value of the record... Protected Sub ddlAdminActionedBy_PreRender(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Dim MyFormView As FormView = CType(LVImprovementView.FindControl("fvAdminImprovement"), FormView) Dim MyDDL As DropDownList = CType(MyFormView.FindControl("ddlAdminActionedBy"), DropDownList) Dim AllUsers As MembershipUserCollection = Membership.GetAllUsers() Dim User As MembershipUser For Each User In AllUsers MyDDL.Items.Add(Profile.GetProfile(User.ToString).FullName) Next Dim lstitem As ListItem = MyDDL.Items.FindByValue("N/A") If lstitem Is Nothing Then MyDDL.Items.Add("N/A") End If MyDDL.DataBind() End Sub Hope you can help!
